Lost
“Sometimes we get trapped in our dreams making us feel unhappy, blocked and stuck..”
This project focused on the idea of social norms and their role in society as well as in our everyday lives. It explores how social norms and stereotypes shape our decisions making process and our perceptions of ourselves and those around us. Through an interactive installation, consisting of a wooden frame structure the size of a human with stings of different colors on its four parts and on the top, I invite people to physically experience the feeling of getting stuck into an "ideal life" box.
This installation, which plays in between reality and imagination, opens a discussion to challenge conventional ideals related to the word 'ideal life' and encourages people to make decisions that are right for them without being pressured by society. It serves the purpose of raising awareness about the pervasiveness of stereotypes and the social pressures that these can bring, specifically to young people who are confronted with the daunting challenge of determining how their future will look like.
The different colors of strings represent the variety of paths that we can take while making decisions, and how different our experiences can be based on the choices we make. By offering this tangible and interactive experience, the project creates a safe space for reflection and gives individuals the opportunity to objectively examine the preconceived ideas and expectations that have heavily influenced their decisions. The goal of this project is to encourage people to be more mindful and to make decisions based on their own values, desires and preferences rather than succumbing to societal pressures and stereotypes.
