“The chaos in the moment”
The calculated sequence of events in the emotional landscapes of her mind.
The female body as the center of perception. A combination of space and time through colors, shades, shapes, and lines. A creative language to explore identity and change. A challenge to my creative limitations, approaching figures from an emotional perspective, giving myself a sense of purity of expression.
One of the very first things that artists learn is human figure drawing and it is likely the most complex form studied by visual artists. When I do figures, it is like sketching with impassioned emotions. I let the knowledge of human anatomy and the proportions of the human head, face, and body unconsciously flow on the canvas. Rough drawings, where the paints just hit the canvas. At the very beginning, I keep my mind blank, having no idea what is gonna appear at the end. A kind of psychotherapy. I just let my mind out for an experience, allowing all my imaginative expression to be free. An exploration of the relationship between body and mind, testing the limits of the nude body. A subconscious journey, allowing my personal experiences to flow through the paintbrush directly onto canvas. I use colors to create emotions in the abstracted figures, leaving the interpretation of the painting to the viewer. The human body emerges from the background and moves through our emotions. The rich patterns of shapes and colors bring figures to life and challenge our imagination. To me, the woman's body is the most interesting subject to explore. It symbolizes absolute beauty and life but also the most intense experience of pain.
By using layers and textures I experiment and explore the relationship between the character and movement of the figure through body language. The moody, yet qualitative, emotions are expressed in my paintings as they emerge into the foreground, bringing the complex, layered textures of the figure into our space as we sense its presence and feelings. Usually, I use faceless figures that challenge the viewer to pull back and view more of what is happening with the body in the space of the canvas. Expression, for me, does not reside bursting from a human face or manifested by violent movement. The entire arrangement of my picture is expressive: the place occupied by the figures, the empty spaces around them, the proportions, all of that have their share. My belief is that a face is put on the body, conveying meaning, emotions, and thoughts and people are drawn more to the face, instead, I want the viewer to define the meaning of the space. The same can be said about the seemingly nude figure because clothing ties a figure to a style or specific period. The body poses are meant to be thought-provoking and inspirational, creating different viewer experiences. The abstracted figures, within many layers and textures, present a non-verbal language, simultaneously depicting a sense of future self-reflection, leaving the viewer to experience the painting, gathering their own information.
